📝 Summary

A facility-wide accessible audio system delivers location-aware audio description content to visitors as they move through the exhibits. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons distributed throughout the galleries let a handheld mobile device recognize where a visitor is standing and play the matching audio description track through headphones. Induction loop drivers at several individual exhibits provide additional hearing-assistance coverage.

🛠️ Operation

1. Hand the visitor a charged Elo M50 mobile device with headphones attached.
2. The device connects to the exhibit wireless network and to the BLE beacons automatically.
3. As the visitor walks the galleries, the device detects the nearest beacon and plays the audio description track for that area.
4. Volume is adjusted on the handheld device itself.
5. On return, place the device back in the DC10 charging dock so it is ready for the next visitor.

🧰 Maintenance

• Keep the handheld devices docked in the DC10 charger between uses so they stay charged.
• Periodically confirm each of the 22 beacons is powered. The beacons are USB powered; a beacon that has lost power will stop triggering audio in its area.
• Wipe down the handheld devices and headphones between visitors per site cleaning practice.
• Confirm the handhelds stay connected to the exhibit wireless network.

Notes

• The 22 beacons are distributed across the exhibit areas so that each zone triggers the correct audio track.
• The Audio Description Control Computer and the Zebra IoT bridge are located in the AV Rackroom.
• Two Ubiquiti access points provide the wireless coverage the handheld devices use.

🔧 Troubleshooting

A handheld guide plays no audio in an area where it should

Why

The beacon covering that area may have lost power, or the handheld may have dropped its wireless connection.

Do this

1. Confirm the handheld is charged and connected to the exhibit wireless network.
2. Check that the beacon serving that area is powered. Beacons are USB powered; reseat the USB connection if needed.
3. Test the same area with a second handheld to confirm whether the issue is the device or the beacon.

Still stuck

If a beacon has power but still does not trigger audio, or if the issue affects multiple areas, contact support.

The headphones are silent

Why

Headphone connection or device volume.

Do this

Confirm the headphones are seated in the USB-C port and raise the volume on the handheld device.
