4.2.7 A Day on the Job

📝 Summary

Interactive handsets, an induction loop, and sensors deliver an audio-driven experience about daily life on the job during construction. The audio clips are hosted on the Q-SYS Core.

🎛️ Controls

Controls

Power on/off and reboot are handled through the control tablet and the Q-SYS/Ottomater show controller. Ottomater cues for this exhibit: ON 101, OFF 102, reboot 103.

🛠️ Operation

  1. The exhibit powers on automatically with the global schedule (7:00 AM to 6:00 PM) or can be overridden from the control tablet; the Q-SYS Core starts audio playback.
  2. Lift each handset and confirm clear audio. The Q-SYS Core hosts the clips and routes them through the AUD01-01 QIO-L4o line outputs to the Day On The Job amplifiers (AMP03 and AMP04).
  3. Confirm the induction loop is active for the inductive (VIA) handsets and check the loop field strength.
  4. Verify the Phidgets sensors trigger the correct clip at each handset.
  5. To restart, reboot the exhibit from the control tablet (Ottomater reboot cue 103).

🧰 Maintenance

  • Inspect the handset cords, couplers, and cradle switches; replace worn couplers.
  • Confirm the AMP03 and AMP04 levels. These amplifiers are non-networked and are fed by the AUD01-01 QIO-L4o line outputs.
  • Check the Williams AV loop driver output and loop field coverage.
  • Verify the Phidgets SBCs register handset-lift and sensor events.

⚙️ Configuration

Applications Used

  • Q-SYS Designer: audio clip playback, routing, and levels on the Core. The Day On The Job clips are hosted on the Q-SYS Core, not on a BrightSign player.
  • Phidget Control Panel / phidgetsbc.local: handset and sensor inputs on the two SBC3003 units.
  • Williams AV loop driver configuration: induction-loop level and EQ.
  • Synaccess netBooter web UI: remote power control.
  • Q-SYS Designer / Ottomater: scheduling and power cues (ON 101, OFF 102, reboot 103).

Connection Details

  • Q-SYS Core (CTL01-01), LAN A: 10.10.0.2 / LAN B: 10.10.0.3 (hosts the audio clips and show control)
  • QSC QIO-L4o line-output node (AUD01-01): http://10.10.0.121 (feeds the non-networked Day On The Job amplifiers AMP03 and AMP04)

Updating Media

  1. Open the Q-SYS design (Hoover Dam Exhibits) in Q-SYS Designer and connect to the Core (10.10.0.2).
  2. Replace the Day On The Job audio clip assets in the Core's audio player components.
  3. Save and deploy the design, then lift each handset to confirm the updated clips play.

🔧 Troubleshooting

Faint audio from one side of the exhibit bleeds into the other side's handsets, most noticeable when the audio pauses between clips

Why

Both program sides once shared a single headphone amplifier, which placed two independent programs on one shared input bus. This was resolved on 2026-06-22 by moving the panel side onto a second amplifier, so each side now has its own signal path.

Do this

  1. Confirm it is crosstalk between the two sides and not a single quiet handset.
  2. Report it to KMI.

Still stuck

Report any return of the bleed; the correction is made in the amplifier wiring, not on site.

One handset is silent or much quieter than the others

Why

Physical damage inside that one handset's coupler, isolated to that position. Wiring and neighboring handsets check out in these cases.

Do this

  1. Note the exact handset position that is silent or low.
  2. Confirm the neighboring handsets are working, which points at the single coupler.

Still stuck

Report the position to support. Coupler replacement requires the original parts and specific tools and is handled on a scheduled visit.

One ear cup is consistently quieter than the other across the whole program

Why

One audio clip was mastered quieter than the others, so the side it plays on sounds low. This was corrected by normalizing all clips to a consistent loudness.

Do this

  1. Note which side is quieter and, if possible, which part of the program.
  2. Report it to KMI so the clip levels can be checked.

Still stuck

Report any recurrence; clip levels are re-normalized remotely on the Q-SYS Core.
